Last week I had the opportunity to test drive a 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD, a small SUV with SkyActiv technology. As expected, Mazda didn’t disappoint with this compact CX-5 crossover. It’s stylish and sporty look wasn’t the only thing that caught my attention, it was the performance and its comfort that made it fun to drive around town.
The fun begins as soon as you hit the start button. As you switch from regular drive mode to sports mode you will immediately experience sharpness in its steering, gear response and overall handling. The road will feel as if it weren’t meant for the two to be together.
The CX-5 included the best safety features like, cross-traffic alert, blind-spot detection, and a warning if you drift out of your lane which can be turned off if it’s too much for you. I personally love this feature in vehicles.
As for it’s interior, well what can I say about it’s elegant style, and material choices? Pure class. The heated seats as usual are comfortable and provide great support for those long commutes, which also includes a nice soft landing strip to rest your arms. Trust, its all in the details.
All though there’s room in the cargo area, the rear seats do not recline but they do fold almost flat, allowing you to store more items in the back, perfect for groceries and shopping. Also, the rear passengers do not have vents or outlets to power their devices. Which can be a war when traveling long distance.
Now let’s talk about it’s entertainment system, Mazda updated its model with its infotainment system. It’s an easy-to-use navigation system provides information, entertainment and has the ability to connect you to the outside world. A nice touch is the location of the audio button behind the gearshift, making the volume easy to adjust without having to reach for a screen.
For us gadget geeks, there are two USB outlets up front and an auxiliary jack but not a regular power outlet.
Going back to the cargo area, since there is no trunk, it does have a cover for you to cover your personal belongings. The only thing that fits underneath the trunk is your spare tire. But hey, if you’re traveling, be aware that there’s plenty of space for suitcases and bags.
Overall I had a great experience driving Mazda’s 2016 CX-5 Grand Touring AWD around town. It’s perfect for a small family or for those who enjoy weekend getaways and long commutes. CX-5 pricing starts at $21,795 for a sport, the Gran Touring price starts at $29,870.
