What is your full name and tell us about where you are from.
My full name is: Angelica Perez-Litwin (PhD)
I was born and raised in NYC, the first daughter of Dominican parents. I consider myself a bicultural Latina — bien Latina and bien Americana.
I lived most of my life in Washington Heights, a Dominican enclave in Manhattan, NY. I went to Columbia University as an undergraduate and have lived in NY all of my life.
Tell us about your Latina background and your family. What does your family think about your geeky passions?
My mother is still trying to figure out what I do online. It’s all a blur to her, but she supports what I do 100%. She still does not know how to use a computer, but we are encouraging her to learn and go online.
My 4 children, on the other hand, love the fact that mami is tech-savvy and digitally connected. I text my kids even when we’re at home to ask them to come to dinner. And, my daughter (who’s in college) and I have a Facebook secret group together, which we use to communicate on important issues.
Tell us about your geeky passion. What are your interested in and why?
My geeky passion is to leverage technology, social media and new media to advance the lives and careers of women. ELLA Leadership Institute is a multi-platform professional development organization that meets women where they are — online, at work, in their community or college. We know that ambitious Latinas are digital Latinas, so we offer educational and networking opportunities online.
The Latina Leadership Network, now with more than 3,200 professional women and leaders from a wide range of sectors, has become one of the most supportive online communities on Facebook. Members find support, guidance and peer mentoring around career, education and leadership matters. Most importantly, they get to connect and build relationships with like-minded women from across the country.
Another geeky passion of mine is the LATINAS THINK BIG national tour, which I launched this year in NYC. We are now heading to Los Angeles, to host our second event at Google’s office in L.A.
The LATINAS THINK BIG event showcases Latina thought leadership, innovation and ambition via a 4-hour live event that focuses on innovative ideas and social impact. The event offers high-caliber professional networking, stimulating conversations and inspiration. These events are live streamed by Google, our partner and sponsor, on Google Hang Out Air.
