It’s time to take control of our reproductive rights, Period.

Pandia Health offers a new option for birth control

Ladies, it’s time we took our reproductive health into our own hands. I know it’s generally a taboo topic, but unplanned pregnancies impact us as a whole. Did you know as a group, Latinas have higher rates of unintended birth than white women or other women of color?

Previous research has suggested that higher unintended pregnancy rates among these groups reflect the particular difficulties that many women in minority communities face in accessing high-quality contraceptive services and in using their chosen method of birth control consistently and effectively over the long term.

While we all love children and some of us are looking forward to having big beautiful families, the consequences of an unintended pregnancy are vast. For younger women, it may derail plans to attend university and/or impact older family members, who in many cases become primary caretakers and help in raising the kids.

And the reasons for not being protected are becoming more manageable with new technology.

In the case of the birth control pill, one of top three reasons women don’t take it is because we don’t have it on hand. Even getting the prescription itself can be a burden of finding the doctor or clinic that has an opening and taking the time out of our day to to go for an exam. And our new administration is not making things easier for women in terms of access to affordable birth control options, in fact they are actively working against us.

I was recently introduced to a new service that is focused on making the process of getting birth control streamlined and easy. Pandia Health is an online one-stop shop for recurring medications such as the birth control pill. It was founded by Dr. Sophia Yen who specializes in reproductive health and is passionate about helping women have access to convenient birth control delivery to the comfort of their own homes or wherever is most convenient. Pandia Health brings together pharmacies and doctors specializing in women’s health to provide affordable, convenient and dignified access to telehealth and pharmacy services.

The service is currently only available in California but will eventually be rolled out nationwide. It uses a telemedicine model that provides flexibility and does not force women to go to a doctor’s office to get their prescriptions. With Pandia Health, you simply complete an online health form and pay a small fee of $39 for the initial consultation or if you already have an existing prescription and want to move it to Pandia, the delivery service is free.

While it is always recommended to be fully safe and protected including using condoms, the birth control pill provides a lot of health benefits that many of us are not aware of. For example, did you know that periods are unnecessary? That’s right, we don’t have to have periods and it’s perfectly safe not to. According to Dr. Sophia Yen, CEO of Pandia Health- periods are totally optional and we can turn them off if we choose to.

She points out that historically, even just 50 years ago, we were all having more children, meaning we were pregnant a lot more and because of that not having periods as much. In fact, every time our uterine linings are turned over (this is menstruation) and we release an egg, our ovaries and uterine lining have to heal. So yep, totally optional and ok to not have periods. How many of us have had to miss a day of work or school because of the pain of cramps? The average high school girl might miss 2 days of school per month and that adds up quickly and could impact school performance. The same goes for working women like us who also miss work because of painful cramps.

Pandia Health is a great option for us to take control of our health and bodies and it works with almost all health insurance plans and all existing prescriptions.

Pandia Health is offering us a special discount as well when we try the service. Enter referral code “LatinaGeeks” when you check out and AND you’ll get $5 off your telemedicine visit, as well as free delivery of the birth control pill, patch, or ring. Also for anyone that signs up for 3 months as part of this offer, Pandia Health will donate to The Orphaned Earring, a charity we love that supplies abandoned girls with vaccinations, school supplies & clothes and works with orphanages in Latin America.

On a personal level, I’m looking forward to giving this service a try!

PS – this is not a sponsored post, I just believe in us taking control of our reproductive health and Pandia Health is an awesome female led startup.
