#LatinaGeeks and Girls in Tech Host Latina-Focused Hands-On Coding Workshop in San Diego

We are proud to announce our next hands-on coding workshop partnership with #LatinaGeeks and Girls in Tech San Diego. On Saturday, February 17, #LatinaGeeks, Girls in Tech San Diego and Microsoft is presenting a hands-on coding workshop designed to empower Latinas with the technical knowledge necessary for a career change and advancement. Geared towards Latina adults in all stages of their career, the coding workshops introduced the three building blocks of the web — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

We noticed from our previous workshops in Orange County and Los Angeles, that attendees were commuting from San Diego to attend our events. With the support of Girls in Tech San Diego, and Microsoft, we collaborated to bring the workshop to them.

If you’re not familiar with the organization Girls in Tech (GIT), they’re a known global non-profit focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of girls and women who are passionate about technology. Today, GIT aims to accelerate the growth of innovative women entering into the high-tech industry and building startups. GIT is not just for professional women. They exist for anyone with an interest in technology, startups and providing women with a platform for growth.

I’ve been following #LatinaGeeks for AWHILE.. it’s honestly been a goal of mine to work with them. Girls in Tech SD is excited to collaborate with the force that is #LatinaGeeks. We are passionate advocates for community-centered movements that educate women. Our goal is to inspire and encourage underrepresented women through meaningful connection and technology, says Vanessa Miranda, Girls in Tech San Diego, Marketing Director.

With the support of Sal Rosales, a Senior Premier Field Engineer at Microsoft, he will lead our Latinas Learn to Code workshop with a 4 hour intensive session teaching the basic skills of coding, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Sal has not only been a strong #LatinaGeeks supporter, but he’s also passionate about diversity in the work place. Mentoring our young Latina community is only one way he’s creating change in the tech space.

Thanks to our supportive sponsors, we are able to not only present a workshop to the community that they will find useful, but for the first time, by popular demand, we are also adding an hour of networking. Many attendees in past events have expressed that we add time for everyone to get to know each other and also have an opportunity to meet the organizers. (Must be over 21 of age to attend networking session) Thank you for your feedback ladies.

If you’ve been following along, by now you may have realized that each month has a theme. With romance in the air and the month of February filled with love, this month’s theme will feature Rosé, thanks to our sponsors Angry Orchard, and Stella Rosa Wines, which will be served during our networking session. A delicious lunch will be provided by Healthy Momma, a local San Diego meal prep service, which offers affordable healthy meals from $3-$8.
