Ready, set, GO! Those aren’t the words you would normally hear when you buckle up to take a new car for a test drive. Fortunately for me, I was able to embrace my inner speed racer and take the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt EV for a spin with the Chevy team.
As I rounded the corners of the autocross, I was instantly made aware that Chevy’s first fully-electric vehicle can hold its own in performance. The durable tires made for sharp, precise turns needed to successfully dominate the track. For those savvy car aficionados, the Bolt EV’s drive system uses a single, high-capacity electric motor for propulsion and the power delivery is controlled by Electronic Precision Shift system – a shift and park-by-wire system that sends electronic signals to the Bolt EV’s drive. As a first time electric car driver, I appreciated the precision shift system, because it made for a super smooth ride. It did take me a few times to get acquainted with the gear shift, but once I did I loved the ease it introduced to my trip around the track.
The flat battery pack spans the entire length of the vehicle’s floor and the driving range is an estimated 238 miles — 255 city or 217 on the hwy. A full 240 V charge will take 9.3 hours leaving you with plenty of drive time to explore a new city. A 7.2 kW onboard charger for regular overnight charging from a 240-V wall box is standard. With it, a typical commute of 50 miles can be recharged in less than two hours. I can see myself taking a trip from Orange County to San Francisco with no worries of a gas fill up; it’s now a thing of the past.
Chevy’s Bolt EV also includes all the tech bells and whistles us geeks look for: standard OnStar 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot (three-month/3GB data trial), a wireless device charging and two USB charging ports for rear passengers, a “floating” instrument panel and multipurpose, connected center console that offers wireless phone charging and a compartment large enough to stow a tablet device. Lastly, the Bolt EV includes offers a Premier Infotainment Package that includes a Bose premium seven-speaker sound system.
Here are a list of safety features you can expect with the Bolt EV:
- Ten standard air bags
- Rear-vision camera standard
- Surround Vision and Rear Camera Mirror are standard on Premier
- Driver Confidence Package is available on LT and included on Premier. Content includes: Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Rear Parking Assist

$37,495 with DFC and before benefits of federal or state tax incentives.
My experience with Chevy Bolt EV was fantastic and I walked away wanting a Bolt! Not only was I impressed with the smooth ride, but the comfort in the front and rear of the car exceeding all expectations.
